The Subsurface Integrity and Mechanics Exploration Group (SIMEG) is an integral component of the Carbon Science Initiative (CSI), under the leadership of Professor Brian McPherson , and is a key part of the Energy & Geoscience Institute (EGI), guided by Professor Milind Deo, aligning its research endeavors with the institute's broader objectives.

Our mission is to explore and solve a diverse array of challenges associated with subsurface integrity, from the nanoscale to the complex mechanics of reservoir management and operation. Our focus is on unraveling the intricate stress states of the Earth and comprehending the mechanical properties of subsurface materials.

Engaging in both foundational and applied research, our team brings specialized expertise in reservoir geomechanics, fluids flow, and the physics underlying friction and faulting. We treat the Earth’s subsurface as an extensive laboratory, extracting and interpreting critical data from boreholes, observing surface deformations, and examining earthquake focal mechanisms. Our methodologies are cutting-edge, combining physics-based models, rigorous statistical analysis, and advanced laboratory testing.

Our applications are diverse and impactful. We strive to enhance CO2 subsurface storage techniques, foster the development of economical geothermal energy hubs, and refine the sustainability of oil and gas production. A key aspect of our research is the study of fluid-rock interactions, with a particular emphasis on their influence on reservoir dynamics, aiming to promote resource extraction that is both environmentally sustainable and efficient.

Moreover, our interest extends to well engineering, focusing on the design and structural integrity of boreholes, essential for gathering critical subsurface information. We meticulously address aspects such as pore pressure dynamics, mud weight window optimization, and design considerations that ensure the efficiency and safety of drilling operations.

Our comprehensive approach to geomechanics and well engineering positions us as leaders in tackling complex challenges in geophysical exploration and resource extraction.
